2003--Our first Year There were 112 participants and we donated $2500.00 2004--Year 2 With the 2004 event, we grew to 245 participants and donated $6000.00, a sizable increase. We left $1000.00 in the bank account to use as “seed” money in the event we needed it prior to receiving the first of our donations for 2005; something we learned in 2003... 2005--Year 3--A Year of Change Presenting the check in the amount of $7,500.00 In 2005 the weather did not cooperate! We had the "sideways" rain we all know and love (yeah, right!) and still we had 225 brave souls who showed up and helped us donate $7500.00. We also decided it was time to do something to raise more money; raffling off a new Harley-Davidson motorcycle seemed like a perfect fit... We did not have the money to buy a motorcycle for the raffle; the IBEW and United Workers Federal Credit Union stepped right up and gave us an interest free (!!!) loan with a payoff date (1 payment) after the event. That year also brought another new partner, Witham and Dickey, a Union print shop that donated the 3000 raffle tickets we needed. In order to comply with the law; we learned that an organization had to be a "501" under the tax code, have had that status for a year and numerous other requirements. Those darn legislators and lawyers sure make it tough to give money away! Millwrights Local 711 offered their assistance with obtaining the raffle license the first year of the raffle; we filed for, and received, our own tax-exempt status that year. We paid off the loan, reserved $15,000.00 for the '06 motorcycle and about $1000.00 for seed money. At this point I would also like to reiterate that your contributions are "safe"; our Articles of Incorporation state that if the organization ever ceases to operate all assets belong to the Doernbecher Foundation. 2006--Year 4 We had the best possible weather! Sunny and 70 or so, over 300 riders showed up to help the kids. The donation really jumped this year; due mostly to the Bike raffle. Without the proceeds from the bike, we still increased $2500.00 over 2005. All had a great time, great weather, great folks and a great cause. While we are still going through the learning process with IRS, Oregon Department of Justice and other agencies involved with charitable giving laws and regulations, the amount of support makes it all worthwhile! 2007--Year 5
Once again we had HEAVY rain; something about a cow and a flat rock came to mind. We had only the most dedicated show up; just over 100 folks :-( But, those were the folks that seem to really care about our kids; with only 1/3 of the participants compared to last year, we raised as $$ the day of the run. Our cash donations from the Unions were considerably higher and we also sold more bike tickets. Of course, our wholesale and retail contributors of raffle prizes raised the bar again, they seem to give more every year. We have the BEST raffle prizes of any run of this kind, now we just need to get the weather to cooperate!
