Unions for kids is alive, well and kicking off our 2010 fundraising efforts to benefit the kids at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital. Our raffle bike this year is a 2010 Harley-Davidson Heritage Softail Classic, color is a beautiful Red Hot Sunglo. At a retail value of $18,804 we are selling a maximum of 4000 tickets at $10.00 each. Raffle tickets are currently on sale at IBEW Local Union 48, IBEW & United Workers Federal Credit Union, UFCW Credit Union (contact Heidi), Pub 212 in Damascus and Teamsters Federal Credit Union, where the bike is currently on display through early March. Also, we will be getting tickets out to more locations in town and the TLC Credit Unions at the coast.
Thank you generous sponsors and participants who made it possible to match last year’s donation of $50,000 to the Doernbecher Children's Hospital. Columbia Motorcycle Harley-Davidson was our largest donor last year. Other major contributions came in from ATU Local 757, IAM & AW Local Lodge 63, IBEW Local 280, IBEW Local 48, Kaiser Permanente and UBC Pacific NW Regional Council. Visit our
Sponsor page for a full list of contributors.
Ron Hamaker, retired IUEC Local 23 member, ticket # 3086 won the 2009 Harley Davidson Dyna Low Rider motorcycle worth $17,000. He bought his lucky ticket at IBEW & United Worker Federal Credit Union, and is proof that it “only takes one ticket to win”! Committee member Barbara Mathey (CEO of IBEW & UW FCU) and the majority of her staff also showed up at the event to help keep things running smoothly.
A special guest kicked off the afternoon raffling by boosting the crowd with
his thanks; reminding them that their generosities touch many lives. Our guest's daughter was born with a cyst on her brain. She was just over a year old when she was diagnosed with a 3-4 inch cyst on the back posterior of her brain. “It was a shock for my wife and myself. It was something you couldn't even imagine. If anybody has children in here, they would totally understand the emotions you go through. So this kind of tells you the money you donate makes a huge difference". His daughters’ cyst was treated but it came back when she was seven, a year ago.
At our chili cook-off tasting is free; the taster then deposits a chip in cans numbered corresponding to number of each entry. This year's chili cook-off winner was
Gail Perryman, member of OPIEU Local 11. Gail works for IBEW & United Workers Federal Credit Union.
The motorcycle poker run was an 80 mile loop with 5 checkpoints for the bikers to draw their cards. John Nelsen, rep from IBEW Local 48 gathered up four queens to win the high poker hand. Check out our 2009 album in the photo gallery for many pictures of the bikes and riders that participated in the run.
